AVIF is the newest web format, and the least supported offline
AVIF is the successor to WebP — even smaller, and increasingly served by large websites. Because it is new, support outside the browser lags badly: most desktop image software cannot open it yet, and neither can many upload forms. When you save an AVIF from a page, converting it to JPG is usually the fastest way to get a file you can actually use.
This tool decodes AVIF using your browser's own decoder, which every current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge has built in. If a file refuses to load, it means your browser is an older version without AVIF support — updating it, or opening the page in a current browser, resolves it. The image is never uploaded either way.
Converting to JPG trades AVIF's efficiency for universal compatibility — the JPG will be larger than the AVIF, but it will open on everything.
How it works
- Drop in one or more AVIF images
- Click Convert
- A single file downloads as JPG, several arrive as a ZIP
AVIF is the newest and most efficient web image format, and the one desktop software is least likely to open. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere. If the JPG is larger than you want, Compress Image reduces it, and Convert Image handles other formats like PNG and WebP.
