Placeholder text should be roughly as long as the real text

The purpose of lorem ipsum is to let you judge a layout without reading it. That only works if the placeholder occupies the space the real copy will occupy. Filling a card designed for a 15-word summary with three paragraphs of Latin tells you nothing except that the card overflows, and filling a 600-word article slot with one sentence hides every problem the article will cause.

Word-count mode exists for this. Write to the brief: if the design calls for a 12-word headline, generate 12 words. Designers who paste the same 50-word block into every slot are testing a layout they will never ship.

The one real argument against Latin placeholder is that it hides typographic problems specific to your language — English has different word lengths, no accented characters, and a different letter frequency. If you are setting type seriously, use real prose in the target language. Lorem ipsum is for layout, not for typography.

How it works

  1. Choose words, sentences or paragraphs
  2. Set how many you need
  3. Copy the generated text

Frequently asked questions

How much lorem ipsum should I generate?
Roughly as much as the real copy will be. Placeholder text exists to test whether the layout holds at the intended length, which it cannot do if the length is wrong.
Why does it start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?
That is the conventional opening, and it is what people recognise as placeholder. Untick the option if you want purely random Latin, which is less likely to be mistaken for content.
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
It is scrambled Latin, derived from a first-century BC text by Cicero. It is deliberately not meaningful, so nobody reads it instead of assessing the design.
Should I use lorem ipsum for typography testing?
No. Latin has different word lengths and letter frequencies from English. Use real prose in the target language when you are judging type, and lorem ipsum only when judging layout.
Are the paragraphs a consistent length?
No — each contains three to six sentences of six to fifteen words, which produces the natural variation real writing has. Uniform paragraphs would make a layout look better than it is.
